Writing vs Fashion

I've started writing because I find small talk challenging. What am I saying! I can't do small talk! I have stories to tell, man—I’ve traveled the world, experienced highs and lows, and made lots of magic along the way.

Today, I might be in a psych ward, but tomorrow, I could be off to South Africa for a couple of months. You never know, and it's all worth documenting. It's a shame that I often don't stop to write when things are happening, but I will in time. After all, more art often comes from the bad times than the good.

Another reason I began writing is that all my other creative pursuits require collaborating with others, which can stifle my creative freedom. That's why I'm also interested in learning how to paint—it's something I can do entirely on my own.

When I work with others, I tend to pick up on the energy in the room and feel pressured to conform. Having worked on fashion sets for a long time, I know that whether you're in a creative industry or a corporate environment, there are always people making decisions about what they want. Often, it feels like I'm hired for tasks anyone could do, because clients are afraid to try something different. They prefer to keep things safe and boring, which kills creativity.

I also struggle with the hierarchy that exists on fashion sets. I can't stand the idea of keeping a job by figuring out just the right amount of flattery. Take a male photographer, for instance—they often want to feel like they're the boss because they're earning the big bucks. They rarely allow much creative input from the team. So instead of focusing on makeup, I find myself trying to navigate the politics of the situation, which isn't what I signed up for.

Another path I've explored is interviewing artists, as it combines the best of both worlds: writing and engaging with creative, inspiring individuals. Choosing to interact with people who are not only creative but also have great character enriches my life. I think I'll invest more time in this pursuit. Sharing meaningful messages and authentic experiences is my passion. For the sake of my peace of mind and mental health, I intend to continue down this path.
